A graduate of the former Wiley High School in Terre Haute, Wolf was a member of the Indiana State basketball and baseball squads. He captained the 1925 baseball team and was awarded the Bigwood Award for the Most Valuable Player in baseball.

For eight years Wolf played professionally in various leagues and coached the Quincy, Illinois team in the ThreeI League. At Indiana State he coached baseball for 17 years and was named Indiana Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year four times—1958, 1963, 1966, and 1967.

A Professor Emeritus from Indiana State, Paul was honored as the Parade Marshall for the 1982 ISU Homecoming Blue and White Parade. He retired in 1970, the same year he received the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award. A scholarship fund has been established in his name. In addition the physical education open recreation field at 4th and Chestnut on the ISU campus bears his name.
