William "Dutch" Fehring
Coach
Born in Columbus, Indiana graduated from Central
High School and attended Purdue University playing baseball,
basketball and football, and excelling in all three. He was football
captain in 1933, a member of the National Basketball Champions in 1932
and was the Big Tens baseball MVP in 1934 as well as the Medal of
Scholarship winner from the Big Ten in 1934. He helped coach the
Boilermaker football and basketball teams from 1934-43, that included
a six year stint as head baseball coach until he entered the U.S. Navy
and served his country from 1943-46.
In 1946-47 he served as assistant football coach at
Oklahoma State, moving to UCLA in 1948 in the same capacity, before
making his final move to Stanford in 1949 serving as the head baseball
coach until 1977 as well as assistant football coach. He served
Stanford as Director of Intramurals and Club Sports and received a Dr.
of Education in 1952.
Dutch was very active in the ABCA, the Americana
Baseball Coaches Association , with a 49 year membership serving on
various committees and was the organization president. He has served
the USBF, the International Baseball Federation, and was a 16 year
member of the Olympic Board. He has instructed baseball, literally,
all over the world and has been inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame
and both the Indiana Baseball and Basketball Halls of Fame
Married to Edna they have three daughters, eight
grandchildren and live in Menlo Park, California.
