Coach
Currently in his 30th year with the South Bend Community School
Corporation Rick is the Dean of Students at South Bend Washington having
served previously as teacher, at-risk coordinator and counselor. His
head coaching career at Washington spanned from 1980-1999. Before his
head coaching stint began Rick was involved with football as head
freshman coach and an assistant with baseball team. Upon taking over the
head coaching reins success was immediate and continued through his 20
year career.
During the 20 years at the helm his teams won nine Northern Indiana
Conference Titles (1980, 83, 85, 86, 87, 90, 96, and 98). There were six
IHSAA Sectional Titles (1982, 85,86,89,96, and 97). Three IHSAA Regional
Titles dot the resume (1982, 85, and 86), and an IHSAA Semi-State Title
in 1985 led to a state runners-up mark in ’85. The overall record of
400-227 figures to a .638 winning percentage.
Two outstanding AAU teams were coached by Rick. The 1983 AAU 16 won a
silver medal and the 1984 squad won the Gold Medal in Jacksonville,
Florida. He also ran clinics and summer camps for Jr. High and High
School players incorporating them into the Washington summer baseball
program. He has also worked as scout for the Pirates.
Graduating from Washington High School in South Bend Rick went on to I.U.
to get a B.S. in marketing and psychology and an M.S. in education,
counseling and guidance. Currently married to Cindy for 21 years (2004)
Rick is also the owner/operator of “T-6” Farms, and 80 acre wildlife
area used to raise grain fed beef cattle and hay.
