In his seventeen year baseball coaching career at Jeffersonville
High School he compiled an enviable 418 win, 159 loss record, a win
percentage of .724. He began his career at Morgan Town High School as
head baseball and basketball coach from 1961-67. His second stint was
at Indian Creek High School from 1968-71, again as both baseball and
basketball coach. From 1972 til 1989 Don was the head baseball coach
and assistant basketball coach at Jeffersonville High School. In 24
seasons as a baseball coach his teams won a total of 519 and lost 209,
a 71% winning percentage.
During his tenure there were two South Central Conference
Championships, three Hoosier Hills Conference Titles, 13 state tourney
sectional titles, 6 regional and 3 semi-state championships. The Jeff
Red Devils of coach Poole were state finalists in 1973, 1980, and
1984. In 1982 and 1983 he coached at the collegiate level at I.U.
Southeast where they were the NAIA District Runners-up in 82 and in
the Final Four in 1983. Don has had five players named All-State,
fifteen players who have played in the North-South All-Star Series,
two Academic All-States and one major league player, Walt Terrell, who
had an eleven year major league as a pitcher. At Jeffersonville he had
only one team to win less than twenty games.
In 1980 and 1984 he was the runner-up in the IHSBCA Coach of The
Year voting, was a North-South All-Star coach in 1980 and was the
president of the IHSBCA for the 1989-90 team. In 1988 he was a coach
for the National Junior Baseball team that competed against other
teams from the United States.
Don is married to Dorothy and they have four children. He retired
from teaching in 1998. He and Dorothy live in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
