Quentin Merkel

The coach at Evansville Memorial High School for 31
seasons his success is chronicled by his record of 679 wins 200 losses
and 3 ties. But he is not through yet as Quentin is still active as
the Tigers head coach.
His teams have compiled 17 City Championships, 15
SIAC Conference Championships, 18 IHSAA Sectionals, 12 Regionals, 9
Semistates and the Tigers have been crowned State Champions three
times , in 1978, 1989, and 1993. They were also State Runners-up in
1970 and 1979. He was recognized as the IHSBCA Coach of the Year in
1978, 89, and 93 and also coached the South All Stars in those same
years.
One of Quentins players was Don Mattingly who
went on to greatness as a Yankee. In addition to Mattingly, Jeff
Schulz, a teammate was also a major league player with Kansas City.
