A graduate of Lockport West High School in Illinois John migrated to college at Franklin where he was a four year starter in football and baseball. After his 1969 graduation he began a stellar coaching career at Providence High School in Clarksville, IN. For six years he was the head baseball coach and an assistant football coach compiling a baseball record of 118-63 for six seasons winning the NAIT Tournament in 72 and the IHSAA sectionals in 1970 and 1974. The next four seasons John was the head coach at Carmel High School putting together a 66-47 record with an Olympic Conference title in 79 and a sectional and regional in 1976. From 1979 until 1994 he was the head coach at New Albany High School and also a football assistant for eleven years.

During this time Johns teams put together a stellar 289155 won/loss record. His teams won the NAIT Conference four times, the Hoosier Hills Conference in 1991, and won sectional titles six times and three regional crowns.

Through the years John was selected Regional Coach of the Year three times, 1976, 1981, and 1986. His career record is a fine 473-265. There have been 57 former players who went on to play baseball in college, seven of his former players who coached baseball in high school and four former assistant coaches who became head coaches.
