Willis began his career at little Hayden High School in 1951-52 where he started the baseball program with only 28 students . He then moved to Elnora where he was basketball coach and also began the baseball program and had one player to sign a professional baseball contract. Continuing his career at Shoals High School as basketball coach he revived the baseball program. At Seymour, his next coaching stop, he was football, basketball and assistant baseball coach and also coached the American Legion team. At Jimtown he was the football and track coach, and finally to Batesville where he coached baseball, football and was the assistant basketball coach.

Willis is the only coach in Indiana to have a player play in the first All-Star baseball series, and also to have a player to play in the first football All-Star series. Arnie Kirschner is the football player and Ted Weigel is the baseball player.

His brother Don, and Willis, are the only brothers to be inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association and nominated Bill Jones to the position of secretary, now executive director of the association, a position he still holds.
