Career was divided into two sections, from 1962-65 and from
1973-87. In between, for seven years, he did not teach/coach but was
in private business. Of the eighteen seasons fifteen of those were at
the varsity level compiling an overall record of 302-87. The last
eleven seasons were at Jasper where he put together a 265-68 record
which is a .795 win percentage. His overall percentage of .776 places
him third in the state among retired coaches. In the eleven seasons he
coached there were nine sectional titles, five regional titles and two
semi-state championships which led to the two State Tournament Finals
appearances in 1981 and 1986. There was never a losing season and at
Jasper averaged 24 wins per season.
He had the opportunity to coach in the All-Star Series two times,
and was the host coach/director for five All-Star Series that were
held in Jasper. Twenty-three of his players went on to play college
baseball, ten were recognized as All-State, and fifteen were nominated
to the South All-Star team. Since the Big 8 Conference began in 1981
fifteen players were recognized as All-Conference, and Jasper was the
conference champs in five of the seven years he coached in the
conference.
He served the coaches association, IHSBCA, on many committees, as
district representative, and as the president of the association
during the 1981-82 season. At the national level he spent six years as
the Chairman of the High School Division of the ABCA, the American
Baseball Coaches Association, representing all the high schools in the
nation.
Ray was instrumental in having the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame
located in Jasper and is the current executive director of the Hall of
Fame. In 1993 he began the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame Celebrity
Golf Classic and Memorabilia Auction, annual events to raise funds to
operate the Hall of Fame.
Married to Janet for 39 years, as of 1999, they are the parents of
one daughter Kim, and four sons Kelly, Jon, Todd, and Darren and
grandparents to eight.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990.
