After graduation from Indianapolis Shortridge High School and
service in the U.S. Army, Tom attended Western New Mexico University
receiving B.S. Degree in 1951. In 1960 he got his M.S. Degree from
Indiana University.
An athlete in high school and college, he was inducted into the
Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition for
his basketball career. Tom and his wife of 46 years, Gerry, are the
parents of five children. Tim, a nursing assistant in Columbus,
Indiana; Matt, a drilling technician for Chevron Oil, Lafayette,
Louisiana; Tom, a teacher and head baseball coach at Connersville High
School; Patty of Canton, Michigan, and Beth, deceased. They are the
grandparents of seven.
Since retiring the Gables have enjoyed traveling and spending their
winters in Florida where Tom likes following the Chicago Cubs baseball
and keeps up with Connersville High School baseball, as well.
He spent 23 years coaching baseball, one year at Monroe Central and
22 at Connersville with one losing season. His overall record is 418189,
a winning percentage of .686. In the IHSAA tournament his teams had a
34-10 Sectional record with 11 sectional titles; 10-7 in Regionals
with 4 regional titles; 1-4 in Semi-states, with a semi-state runnerup
in 1975. There were 4 South Central Conference Championships and 4
runners-up. They were champions in four invitational tourneys. Seven
of his players were chosen to play for the South All-Stars. They were
Gary Caldwell, Randy Jobe, Randy Judd, Doug Sparks, Billy Macke, Jeff
Cotton and Shawn Russell. Two of his players, Jim Todd and Billy Macke
were drafted and played professionally at the minor league level.
