Bill Evans

A graduate of Terre Haute Garfield, he was a four
year starter on the baseball team and followed that with a two year
performance with Indiana University. He played a little pro ball in
the Kitty League and the Mississippi---Ohio Valley League , the
Western Indiana League and the IK League.
His coaching career in Indiana began in 1955 at
Rockport High School, which later became South Spencer High School.
There was ten years at Rockport and two years at South Spencer. His
teams won 139 games and lost 66 during that twelve year span which
included 7 PAC Conference Championships. The first year the IHSAA
began the state baseball tourney his South Spencer team won the
sectional and the regional and defeated the # 1 ranked team in Indiana
in the regional final game advancing to the semi-state round of the
state tourney where they were upended in their bid to attend the first
state finals. The 1967 record of 31-9 is still the best record in
school history
In addition to high school coaching Bill is the
founder of American Legion baseball in Rockport which has produced
four state legion titles and one appearance in the American Legion
World Series. His legion teams posted a 250155 won-lost record from
1957-65, and 1971.
He was awarded the Arlie Skelton Memorial Award
presented by the state American Legion for contributions to legion
baseball. Also served as 8th District baseball chairman and
was the state director for four yeas. He also found time to administer
the athletics department at South Spencer for seven years.
