A graduate of Elkhart High School Dave went on to receive a BA in
journalism from Indiana University receiving the Ernie Pyle Award for
sports writing two times. At the Elkhart Truth he served as assistant
sports editor covering the city and county beats and writing periodic
columns and features. Moving to the Herald-Argus in LaPorte he served as
the sports editor for 28 ½ years. He did the page layouts and managed a
staff of six reporters. Covered every local high school sport writing
many features and columns. He had the opportunity to cover selected
games of the Bulls, White Sox and Cubs, Pacers and Universities of
Kentucky and Louisville. During this stint USA Today was launched and
Dave was an original member of the high school staff doing freelance
writing for 12 years and then full time beginning in 1994. He originated
the Super 25 team and player rankings for football and boys basketball
and did the same for baseball for 11 years and girls basketball for four
years. Was the anchorman on the prep staff for 17 ½ years. Dave served
as the national sports editor of the new company HIGHWIRED.COM from
Watertown, Mass, a national website/magazine. He contributed material
for AOL and Digital Cities and did national rankings for teams and
players.
Many awards have come his way. Dave was the first newspaperman to be
inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations
Hall of Fame. Significant note: John Wooden wrote the letter of
recommendation for Dave. He is the only high school writer to be
inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame. In 2003 he was
inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame
and has won or shared 31 awards. Noteworthy items in his career was
being an original member of the committee to select McDonalds All
American basketball team; has been featured in Sports Illustrated, New
York Times and Chicago Sun-Times; was called the “Walter Cronkite of
high school basketball” by Birmingham Post Herald; wrote columns in
Basketball Times for eight years and for 21 years did material for
Street & Smith's Magazine. He was the publicity director for the IHSBCA
for 17 years promoting Indiana baseball.
Dave has been either sponsor or co-sponsor for local Fellowship of
Christian Athletes for past 29 years and in 1994 was named Grand
Marshall by LaPorte Jaycees for their Fourth of July parade. He is in
his 40th year covering prep sports the last 30 on a national basis.
Dave has been married for past 15 years, as of 2004, to former Lois
Joslyn, who teaches third grade in LaPorte. Daughter Lynette Duke lives
in North Carolina; Randy deceased; one grandson Josh Wilmsen and three
stepchildren Brooke Joslyn deceased; Jami Holt of Laporte and Kelli
Jonkman of Demotte.
