Ken Schreiber
Coach - LaPorte High SchoolIncluded in his 38 plus years of
coaching the Slicers, Ken has established a record that will most likely stand the test of
time, 1010 wins and 217 losses for an outstanding winning percentage of .823. He is the
winningest coach in the state of Indiana in any sport, ranks third in the nation in
victories. Included in those 1010 victories are 25 conference titles, 28 sectionals, 18
regionals and 11 semi-states that led to a record 7 state championships, 1967, 1971, 1976,
1982, 1987, 1990, and 1992. The 1973 team was a state runner-up.
As you can imagine that kind of success did not go unnoticed. Within the state he has
been named Coach of the Year eight times. This has led to Ken being named the National
Coach of the Year on three occasions, 1977, 1987, and 1998 as presented by USA Baseball
and the Major League Players Association. During the 98 season Collegiate
Baseball Publication selected him as one of two coaches to share a Coach of the Century
award. A special honor was accorded him in 1985 by his university, Valparaiso, by
presenting him with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
An accomplished clinician he has spoken all over the country highlighted by
presentations at the National Baseball Convention on four occasions. He has authored
several publications and now serves on the board of Diamond Products, Inc. The Slicer
program has sent nine players to the big leagues and over 100 players to the college
ranks.
He has been inducted in many halls of fame including, Valparaiso University, Michigan
City Elston, LaPorte Old Timers, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and most recently
in July 1999 will be inducted into the National Federation Hall of Fame presented by the
National Federation of High School Athletic Associations. A 1998 highlight was being
presented a Sagamore of the Wabash Award by the Governor of Indiana. |
